The Warriors boys team had a perfect undefeated regular season (11-) in dual meet action and dominated the Hockomock League Championships after coming in second last year.
The Sun Chronicle recapped KP's absolutely dominating performance at Hocks:
Apparently finishing as runner-up to Sharon at last year's Hockomock League Championship Meet didn't sit too well with the King Philip Regional boys' swimming team.
That snapped KP's run of dominance at the meet, the Warriors having taken first every year since the inception of the league.
Well, the Warriors are back on top.
Winning every individual event but one and taking all three relays, KP compiled up an eye-popping 383 team points to reclaim the crown Friday night. Taunton finished in second place, some 99 points behind.
Chris DiGiacomo, Luke Sprague and Mike Choate were all-double winners and the 200 freestyle relay team set a school record to power the Warriors.
"The kids were excited. It's been a tough January, with more meets than practices, but their hard work paid off," said KP coach Kathy White. "Even the underclassmen stepped up for us; we had a lot of season-best times."
It was there that the Warriors made a big time splash. Bishop Feehan had jumped out to an early lead, but KP completed a big time comeback.
The Boston Globe looked at the Warriors' comeback:
No event represented this sectional better than the 400 freestyle relay. The boys’ team from Bishop Feehan led the first two legs of the race, but King Philip’s final two swimmers teamed up for a comeback victory, edging the Shamrocks by .23 seconds.
Just like in the relay, Bishop Feehan got off to a strong start in Sunday’s meet. The Shamrocks led after four events, but King Philip won five of the final seven to capture the title.
The Warriors, who were 11-0 this season, finished with 218 points. Bishop Feehan was second (189) and Framingham third (155).
Chris DiGiacomo led the way for the Warriors, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 52.59 and the 200 individual medley in 1:56.47. DiGiacomo was also a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:30.78) and the 400 free relay (3:18.35).
Senior Luke Sprague contributed a win in the 100 freestyle and junior Michael Choate took the 100 backstroke.
Milford senior Maddie Garber first set a new meet record at the MIAA Division 1 Central/South Sections in the 100 Yard Breaststroke wiht a time of 1:05.19, over a second better than the previous meet record, set back in 2005. In the D1 State Finals at MIT, Garber went on to race to All-American status in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, finishing with a personal best time of 1:03.63, which tied the meet record set all the way back in 1997. The state record is 1:03.39.
Chris Villani talked about Milford's season for The Town Crier:
Garber and Piergustavo led the way for the girls. Garber won the state championship in the breaststroke with an All-American qualifying time of 1:03.63. Piergustavo, despite not being a year-round swimmer, was runner up in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events at the league meet.
Milford finished 19th overall (33 points) but like Algonquin, the Scarlet Hawks got a standout day from Madison Garber. Garber set a new state meet record in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.63) and qualified for All-American status in the process. She was also eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:12.88).
