Underclassman of the Year - Nick Santucci, Franklin
Franklin freshman third baseman Nick Santucci has been named the 2013 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year, sponsored by RBI Academy in Foxboro. The rookie exploded onto the scene with an incredible first-year campaign.
Santucci batted .417 for the season, good for top ten in the entire league, and best among third baseman and freshman. He also knocked in 20 runs, which led the Panthers and was second in the entire league.
"I really expected not to see that much playing time," said Santucci. "I expected to be at the bottom of the order. But through practice and getting to know the guys on the team, I worked my way up and earned my spot. My teammates did a good job welcoming me too."
The freshman also came up clutch for the Panthers - twice. First, Santucci singled in the winning run in a 9-8 win at home over King Philip in mid-May. The rookie struck again just 11 days later, with his line drive into right scoring the game-winning run in the first round of the Pedroli Memorial Daily News Classic.
"I'm hoping to get stronger really," he said. "I'm going to grow, I'm only a freshman so I have time."
Honorable Mention: Zach MacLean, Taunton - Jake Gibb, Stoughton
