Overview
In the first installment of our Game of the Week for 2015, we have two boys basketball teams that are early season contenders for the Kelley-Rex division.
Taunton sits at a perfect 5-0 and will host King Philip, who stands at 3-1. The Tigers have had two thrilling wins so far, including a last second three pointer to beat Oliver Ames and an overtime thriller to beat Durfee. For the Warriors, all three wins have been by double digits while their one blemish is from Mansfield, the defending division champions.
Through its first five games this season, Taunton is averaging an impressive 79.4 points per game. The Tigers have had players score above 20 points this season on six occasions, more than any other team in the Hockomock. Corey Green has scored over 20 in four of the five games, Durfee transfer Jose Mercado has had two 20-plus games and sophomore Tommy MacLean dropped in a career best 34 points against Durfee this past week, which is the highest scoring performance by any Hockomock player this season. Also chipping in for the Tigers this season has been EJ Dumbreville, who teams up with Mercardo to give Taunton some size. Defensively, Taunton has allowed an average of 65.8 points per game but they are winning games with an average margin of 13.6 points.
For King Philip, the Warriors rank in the top five for both points scored per game and points allowed per game. On offense, KP has averaged 65.5 points per game which ranks fourth among Hockomock teams. The one game they didn't score more than 60 points was their loss to Mansfield, a game in which their defense didn't let up 60 either. On offense, Ryan Layman and James O'Brien have led a balanced scoring attack. Layman and O'Brien have both scored in double digits in all three wins and are both coming off a season-high 19 points in the Warriors win over Milton. Erich Ryan has also chipped in offensively and can be a monster on the glass while Noel Kean, Jorge Casado and Nick Dumont have all made big shots for the Warriors. On defense, the Warriors often switch up what they use - switching from zone to zone and mixing in man as well as throwing in some press. The Warriors' length is something that can give teams a headache.
The biggest matchup to watch will be Taunton's speed against King Philip's size. As seen through the first five games of the season, the Tigers like to score and they like to score often. They have more than just one guy that can get hot and get going offensively, and that can be trouble for defense. On the flip side, KP has great length, size that Taunton hasn't seen this season. Seeing as how first year coach Matt Coute has already shown he is willing to switch up defenses at any time in the game, it will be interesting to see what he comes up with for Taunton's high power offense.
