Game of the Week - 02/03/12
By: Ryan Lanigan
Breakdown:
The second time around is always better. Mansfield will host King Philip on Friday with the Warriors looking for redemption over the Hornets. Mansfield was able to win in the first meeting, 59-50, over KP. Now, 45 days later, the two will decide who has a chance to finish at the top of the Kelley-Rex. With red-hot Franklin lingering around, the one who comes out victorious in this game will have an edge over other teams. As always, the attention will be on Hockomock-leading scorer Jake Layman. Despite 28 points last time around from Layman, the Hornets used a tough defensive effort on the big man and crashed the boards.
Players To Watch:
Layman is obviously a big name to watch but there are going to be other players that will make a name in this game. Mansfield brothers Brian and Michael Hershman are very dangerous if they can get their shots falling from the outside. Michael is coming off a career-high performance with 24 points on Tuesday. One of the biggest difference makers the first time around was 6’4 Terry O’Mara from Mansfield. On the other side, expect John Mullane, Sam McDonald, and Christian Fair to be the ones who step up.
Key Matchup(s):
The matchup to watch isn’t between two players but rather who gains the advantage in rebounds. There’s plenty of factors that will help decide this game but both coaches and teams know how important it will be to control the boards, especially defensively. If a team is able to get the upper hand on the offensive glass, expect them to get some buckets to put their team ahead.
BONUS: It wouldn’t be right if we just went without mentioning the big Thursday match up between #4 Franklin and #1 Stoughton. The hottest team in the Hock pays a visit to the top team in search of revenge. The Black Knights beat the Panthers on their home court and now Sam Bohmiller and company are looking to return the favor. Bohmiller is coming off a career-best 26 points in a big win over KP. Stoughton was able to grind a fourth quarter comeback against the Foxboro Warriors. Now, with the third and fourth highest scorers in the league matching up in Aaron Calixte and Bohmiller, it will surely be an entertaining game. Joe Palazini and Marcus Middleton will be two names who will also show up in the box score after the game.
