Overview
Friday marks the battle of the 3-0 teams as the Kelley-Rex and Davenport will both have a high stakes game.
First, Oliver Ames will take a quick trip down Route 138 to visit the Stoughton Black Knights. While they have different Thanksgiving opponents that determine their natural opponents, this might be the biggest rivalry in the Davenport. Whether it be football, volleyball, basketball, baseball or any sport, it seems as though both schools get a little extra excited when they play each other. Add in the fact that they are both unbeaten at 3-0 and this should be a great one.
Stoughton has always prided themselves on their strong defense and they have succeeded so far with that, giving up an average of 13 points a game through three games. More surprising, especially with a new quarterback at the helm and key departures at the skill positions is how strong the Black Knight offense is doing. They have scored an average of 38.33 points a game, tops in the entire Hockomock league, including Attleboro and Mansfield.
On the other side of the ball, Oliver Ames is coming in sporting the best defense through three games among Davenport teams. They have allowed on average just 11.67 points a game, tied with the Bombardiers for second in the entire league, trailing only KP who has given up 19 points total through three games. OA's offense is competing at a high level as well, averaging just over 30 points a game which is good for third in the league.
The game is played beyond the numbers but heading into Friday, we'll have the Davenport's top two offenses and top two defenses going head to head.
In our second Game of the Week, the night cap will feature the 3-0 Hornets of Mansfield traveling to the brand new Tozier-Cassidy Field to take on the 3-0 Attleboro Bombardiers.
Mansfield has had a successful season already but it's scary to think that they are continuing to get starters back and that they haven't clicked on all cylinders yet. The Hornets have an impressive win of Maryland's Dunbar and a shutout of Milton. They also made a statement with a big 35-14 win over rival North Attleboro last week. QB Kyle Wisnieski is getting more and more weapons back each week and he is becoming very comfortable with the ball. The Hornet defense, giving up just over 13 points a game, is also getting starters back for the game against Attleboro.
Now the Kelley-Rex's best offense Attleboro - coming in averaging over 37 points a game - will look to try and make noise against the Hornets. The Kelley-Rex in general has been stout on defense, giving up just over 15 points as a whole on average while the Hock averages just a hint over 19 points a game. Tim Walsh has been a break out star of the season and he has the weapons that will really challenge any defense.
At the end of Friday night, only two of these teams are going to emerge 4-0 while two will suffer their first losses. Which teams will be 4-0? Make sure to vote in our poll below.

What to Expect
From Oliver Ames: If you had to sum it up in one word - balance. Especially on offense, the Tigers have both the run game and the pass game working. Running back Matt Berksza rushed for over a 100 yards against Foxboro last week while quarterback Nick Cidado tossed for over 200. You can even take it a step further and just take Cidado as a good example for balance. He has the precision to beat you with his throwing but just when you can adjust to that, he has the wheels to escape the pocket and get a big gain on the ground.
Their defense is balanced too, but it starts up front for OA. Defensive lineman Josh Briggs, Chris Duggan, Colin Lozzi and linebacker Joey Tepper have all come up with big plays consistently through the first three games while opposing run games have been suppressed. Foxboro boasts a strong core of running backs but the experienced OA line was able to keep them out of rhythm and didn't allow many yards on the ground. In the secondary, OA has shown well too. They were able to get two interceptions in coverage against Foxboro, including a big one from captain Jake Fitzgerald that changed the game's momentum.
From Stoughton: On the defensive side of the ball, it's going to be more of the same for the Black Knights that we have seen in the past. The defense will play strong, fast, and won't make too many mistakes. They have a lot of experience up front and they will hope they can use that to disrupt the balanced offense that Oliver Ames runs. The secondary was one of the biggest questions for Stoughton this season after losing Aaron Mack and Marcus Middleton to graduation, but so far so good for the Black Knights.
Offensively, Stoughton has been on an absolute tear. They average the most points through three games in the entire league and that's due to their big play ability. This past weekend they have touchdown runs of 74 yards, a 12 yard run set up by a 40 yard run, 69 yards, 50 yards, and 20 yards. Malachi Baugh has been on fire so far, rushing for three touchdowns in each of the last two games but has been complimented very nicely by junior Joe Girolamo and Lennox Greene. Jovani Pires has help complete a Wing-T formation that has been somewhat unstoppable through the first three games. Expect a lot of different looks for Stoughton and a lot of different players to touch the ball.
From Mansfield: Three games into the season, we knew we would be talking about Mansfield quarterback Kyle Wisnieski and his main weapons Brendan Hill and Michael Hershman. But so far, the talk of the Hornets has been MVP - Miguel Villar-Perez. He has become the main feature back for Mansfield and has taken full advantage. The offensive line has played strong led by captains Steve Zieselman and Nick Paquin. The Hornets got a boost last week when Kyle Hurley returned to the line up, but even more starters will be coming back this week. Senior Alex Ruddy looks to be back and his ability to carry the ball will add just another wrinkle into an already dynamic offense. On the defensive side of the ball, look for Aurian Dawkins and Q'ra Guichard to start making plays.
From Attleboro: Defensively, the Bombardiers secondary will get its biggest test of the season, but Attleboro has shown far more flexibility in its coverage schemes than in years past. Tom Burns picked off three passes last week and Ryan Bowen and Pat Dunn both made solid plays down the field, but that was against a Franklin offense incorporating Nick Zucco back into the offense and Attleboro will need someone to match up with Brendan Hill. One of the keys will be the Bombardiers front seven creating pressure in the backfield. Luke Morrison, Sean Reardon, and Joe Russas were just three of the players that had good games last week and sophomore Kyle Murphy takes up a lot of room in the middle of the line.
On offense, Attleboro has been firing on all cylinders behind a high-tempo spread look that gives quarterback Tim Walsh the freedom to look deep with underneath options. The pace of the offense was huge against Franklin as it wore down the Panthers in the first half. Walsh will look for Brenden Massey down field on the outside and Morrison down the middle, but he is able to spread the ball around to several weapons. The Bombardiers have several runners to keep the defense honest and junior Damon Belin emerged last week as a good change of pace back as well.

Game of the Week - The Pick
Oliver Ames (3-0) @ Stoughton (3-0) - 3:45
Ryan Lanigan, HockomockSports.com
I didn't make too many friends when I picked against Oliver Ames last week and I'm not going to make many more again this week. From very early in the season, I said that Stoughton was the team to beat in the Davenport and they have done nothing to change my mind. But Oliver Ames has looked real strong the two games I have seen them and to be honest they looked like Davenport championship material in their win over Foxboro. I truly believe this is going to be a close game that is won in the trenches, which is even more entertaining because these two teams have arguably two of the best lines in the entire league. It's going to come down to a big fourth quarter play.
The Pick: Stoughton 29, Oliver Ames 27
Josh Perry, HockomockSports.com
Expect Stoughton to be pumped up for the home opener, but I wonder if there will be the same energy that there would've been if the game was being played on Friday night instead of at3:45. The Tigers have enough of a passing game with Nick Cidado to cause the Black Knights secondary, which lost two key pieces from last year, more problems than they've seen this year. If OA stops Malachi Baugh, this could be a convincing win.
The Pick: Oliver Ames 34, Stoughton 21
Danny Ventura, Boston Herald High Schools
Black Knights appear to have taken on and us-against-the-world mentality in the early part of the season. I think they might have a little too much in the well for an Oliver Ames team coming off an impressive win over Foxboro. I'll take the Black Knights in a close one.
The Pick: Stoughton 21, Oliver Ames 13
Chris McDaniel, The Enterprise
The chip on Stoughton's shoulder after not being in last year's playoffs can be seen from the moon. The Black Knights have opened their season like a bat out of hell, outscoring opponents 115-39. Malachi Baugh has led that charge with eight touchdowns of his own. OA coach Jim Artz will rely on his front four to slow down a dominant Stoughton rushing attacked that gashed the Tigers for 177 yards in the first of the teams' meeting last year (a 44-21 Stoughton win). Nick Cidado is certainly no slouch at quarterback for OA. Both teams know the Davenport Division title is on the line in this one, so OA surely won't come out slow like they did against Pembroke. If Cidado stars, the Tigers will have the inside track on the league championship, but right now I don't see anything getting in front of the Stoughton freight train this year.
The Pick: Stoughton 37, Oliver Ames 22
Brendan Hall, ESPNBoston High Schools
In the preseason I said Oliver Ames is the favorite here in the Davenport, but while the Tigers appear to be hitting their stride after last week's nice win over Foxborough, I'm not sure they've encountered a back as dynamic as Stoughton's Malachi Baugh yet. There is talent to be had in "Tough Town", perhaps more than we've given credit for to this point.
The Pick: Stoughton 24, Oliver Ames 17
Bruce Lerch, Boston Herald High Schools
After several years of futility, the Black Knights have been on the upswing with back-to-back winning seasons. This year, they know a similar effort will finally grant them the playoff berth that eluded them a year ago. This year, they'll show they don't need the new system to get there and that starts with winning games like this. And with all that this program endured last year, both on and off the field, they deserve it. Malachi Baugh and the rest of the Knights big-play crew get it done in a shootout.
The Pick: Stoughton 35, Oliver Ames 28
Scott Barboza, ESPNBoston High Schools
Whichever team wins this one will have a strong inside track to the Davenport Division crown. I picked the Knights in the preseason and I'm sticking with my instinct, especially with Malachi Baugh running hard in the early weeks of the season.
The Pick: Stoughton 20, Oliver Ames 14
Mansfield (3-0) @ Attleboro (3-0) - 7:00
Ryan Lanigan, HockomockSports.com
What's this #1 curse people are talking about? Mansfield has been #1 in our Hock 5 Rankings since the preseason and haven't skipped a beat. This Attleboro team though has a real shot at causing a hiccup for the Hornets. Tim Walsh is the real deal but so is Kyle Wisnieski. This could be the best match up of quarterbacks that we will see all year. Both teams have had strong defensive showings so far this year so I don't expect a big shootout, but this one will be decided on the offensive side of the ball.
The Pick: Mansfield 28, Attleboro 20
Josh Perry, HockomockSports.com
The Hornets are the latest to have to battle the curse of being ranked no. 1 and will face a real challenge in the upstart Bombardiers. Last year, Attleboro nearly pulled out a victory but for some mental mistakes in the fourth quarter, and this is a much better Attleboro squad. Having said that, Attleboro hasn't faced a team as good as Mansfield yet and it will be important to for the Bombardiers stay in the game early to keep the confidence that they have built over the first couple of weeks. I think this will be a shootout, but the Hornets will hang on for the win.
The Pick: Mansfield 38, Attleboro 34
Danny Ventura, Boston Herald High Schools
Big litmus test for an Attleboro team which has exceeded expectations in the minds of some early on. That being said, Mansfield will provide the stiffest challenge to date. The Hornets showed they could bring it on both sides of the ball against a solid North Attleboro team and I see that carrying over.
The Pick: Mansfield 27, Attleboro 14
Chris McDaniel, The Enterprise
All of the previous "no. 1" teams in the state had flaws that were exposed in their losses. Mansfield has yet to show a flaw this season. The Hornets can a close game, a shootout or just dominate with their defense. The Bombardiers haven't shown they can win the tight games dating back to last. Attleboro won't be able to impose their will to beat Mansfield like they did against their first three opponents. The Bombardiers need to play a perfect game and hope the Hornets cough up the ball a few times after opening their season with a difficult schedule. It's about time the curse of being ranked No. 1 was broken.
The Pick: Mansfield 35, Attleboro 20
Brendan Hall, ESPNBoston High Schools
Attleboro's defensive line is pretty underrated, and I think that's where they can do a lot of damage against the Hornets. But Mike Redding is one of the better coaches around at game-planning to take out an opponent's top target -- look no further than the Dunbar win as evidence. Mansfield seems much more perimeter-oriented than in years past, with Brendan Hill and Miguel Villar-Perez the primary benefactors, and it they can stretch this game outside the tackle boxes than I think then newly-anointed No. 1's can do enough to break our dreaded "ESPN Boston Curse."
The Pick: Mansfield 20, Attleboro 13
Bruce Lerch, Boston Herald High Schools
The Blue Bombardiers have been piling on the points as Tim Walsh and his receivers have been clicking at an impressive rate. Now it's time to see what they can do in a truly certified "Big Boy Game." The Hornets proved last week they have a defense and a running game and are considered the top-ranked team in the state for a reason. Perhaps more people will take notice of this D after this one. Attleboro's reign atop the MIAA playoff points spreadsheets comes to an end here.
The Pick: Mansfield 40, Attleboro 13
Scott Barboza, ESPNBoston High Schools
I think the most encouraging part of last week's win for the Blue Bombardiers was Tom Burns' three interceptions. If Attleboro can replicate the effort against the Hornets, they'll have a chance. That being said, think there are just too many weapons to contend with.
The Pick: Mansfield 42, Attleboro 38
