4/24 - BOYS LACROSSE: Foxboro @ Canton
The Breakdown:
The first boys’ lacrosse Game of the Week is a showdown of two undefeated Davenport division teams. Canton plays host to preseason favorite Foxboro at World War II Veteran Memorial Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs are a deep team and had expectations of challenging Foxboro this season. Canton has gotten off to a 6-0 start, which has included a pair of overtime wins and the program’s first win over Franklin in eight seasons. Canton’s strength is its experience in the attack, in particular seniors JC Marcone and Pat Ward, who scored the double overtime winner on Monday against Sharon. New goalie Ben Lodge, who had not played the position prior to this year, has been a revelation behind a strong defense captained by Connor O’Brien. This is a team ready to take the next step and try to dethrone the Warriors.
Foxboro, which is in many publications' rankings, entered the season as the favorite to take home the Davenport title and little has happened in the first six games to change people’s minds. Foxboro’s strength is on the defensive side of the ball, especially senior Luc Valenza, who drew preseason all-state hype. There was some concern about the goalie position coming into the season after Greg Stamatov graduated, but Tyler Elfmann has stepped right in and been solid. Foxboro has not allowed more than nine goals in a game all season.
While Canton is coming off an overtime thriller against the Eagles, Foxboro easily handled new Hockomock League rival Milford and the Warriors offense seems to be clicking into gear led by midfielder Alex Pacitti and attacker Tyler Ames. Of course, earlier this season Canton also beat Milford handily, so on paper this seems like an even match-up between the top two teams in the division for each of the past several seasons.
This will be a statement game for both teams. Foxboro are the favorites trying to separate themselves from the rest of the pack and Canton is the team looking to unseat its rivals. It should be a battle.
