Sharon has hired Andrew Ferguson as its new boys basketball head coach, AD Bill Martin confirmed to HockomockSports.com.
Ferguson has spent the past two seasons as the JV coach and has spent a total of seven years as a part of the program.
"It’s honestly a dream come true," Ferguson said. "Especially with this senior class too, I had them when they were freshmen and then moved up to the JV coach when they were sophomores. This is pretty much a dream job."
Prior to being the JV coach, he spent two years as a voluntary assistant coach for the freshman team and then was head coach of the ninth-graders for three seasons. Ferguson takes over for Bruce Jackman, who was not retained following this past season after over a dozen years as head coach.
"We are excited for future of Sharon basketball under the leadership of Andrew Ferguson," Martin told HockomockSports.com. "Andrew was chosen by the committee after interviewing five excellent candidates. The committee was impressed by his interview and what he has brought to the basketball program over the past four years. I am looking forward to working with Andrew this fall to prepare for his first season of many leading the boy's program."
Ferguson has a strong core of players returning for this winter, including Matt Lowerre and David Roelke, who will both be in their third year on varsity. Other notable names include Bryce Smith, Tyler Smith, Ricardo Ripley, Andrew Filipkowski, Mitchell Sirota, Michael Zola and Peter Banks.
"This is where I started," Ferguson said. "Being in the Hockomock, to me which is one of the best leagues in the state, and staying where I started, growing up with the kids in the program and being in this community, I couldn’t think of any other place I’d want my first varsity coaching job to be."
The Eagles will tip off their season in December on the road against Mansfield, the defending Kelley-Rex champions.
