Overview
In the second installment of Game of the Week this Winter, two Hockomock rivals will meet at the biggest venue in the commonwealth, the TD Garden. For the second straight year, Mansfield and Franklin will participate in the GoodSports Invitational.
As of Friday morning, Mansfield stands as the lone undefeated Hockomock team left at 6-0. Franklin is coming off two big wins over Kelley-Rex teams and stand at 6-2. The Hornets have picked up wins on the road against Sharon, King Philip, Dorchester and North Attleboro while beating Canton and Attleboro at home. The Panthers have wins over North Attleboro, Taunton and King Philip at home and road wins over Canton, Attleboro and Catholic Central (NY).
Entering Friday night's games, Mansfield and Franklin are both in the top five teams for average points scored per game and average points allowed per game. Mansfield is the second best scoring team at 71.5 points per game while the Hornets boast the best defense, giving up just 50 points per game on average. Franklin is up to 66.0 points per game, which is fourth among Hockomock teams. On the defensive side, Franklin is allowing 53.0 points per game, which is third best in the league.
Ryan Boulter leads the Hockomock in points per game, scoring just under 26 points per game and is coming off a career-high 35 points in Mansfield's win on Tuesday. Michael Boen is averaging a double-double this season with just under 15 points per game and just over 10 rebounds a game. The duo can cause headaches for opposing defenses as they both are able to shoot from beyond the arc and take the ball to the hoop. Junior Nick Baskin has stepped in as a strong contributor for the Hornets this season while the same goes for Matthew Ehrlich.
For Franklin, Marcus Giese is on an absolute tear. Since the second half of the Catholic Memorial game, Giese has been a monster scoring and on the glass. He's averaged 24 points per game over the last 12 quarters of play and has brought down 29 rebounds in the last two games. Dylan Reno had a career game on Tuesday in Franklin's quadruple overtime win over Taunton, posting a triple double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Junior Tim Prunier has also had a solid season so far as the three have taken turns being the leading scorer so far through eight games.
Mansfield and Franklin have played some of the most memorable games over the course of the last couple of seasons, including last year at the TD Garden. The Hornets didn't convert a field goal in the fourth quarter and survived a last second shot to beat the Panthers by three. The biggest wrinkle this time around will be CJ Neely, who took over as head coach of Franklin this season. After getting to know each other so well over the years, it will be interesting to see what will be added to the rivalry.
Tickets can be purchased at the TD Garden. Tickets are $15.
