Games of the Week - 1/26/13
Breakdown
This week's Game of the Week switches over from the hardwood to the ice as we put the focus on a big Hockomock Kelley-Rex game between the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers and Mansfield Hornets. Both teams are coming off from extremely different results. Mansfield routed Taunton 11-0 on Wednesday while North is coming off only their third loss of the season via a 7-1 loss to Franklin. The results could prove to help or hurt both teams. On one hand, Mansfield could fall into a lull after their big win on Wednesday, but could also continue their offensive onslaught. Big Red might fall into a slump, or could use their tough loss as a big motivational point to come into Saturday.
Mansfield currently sits atop the Kelley-Rex at 6-0 in league play and a 7-1-3 overall record. Their only loss came to Canton on the road before Christmas, a game they will have a chance to avenge early on in February. They are currently riding a six game win streak in which they have only surrendered just over a goal a game on average, whiling scoring over 5 goals a game in the current streak. North Attleboro has been one of the best early season teams, but find themselves just 1-2 in the past three games. They only managed one goal in each of their losses and will hope to break out offensively. Both teams have solid fan bases and the atmosphere should be great come Saturday night.
Players to Watch
The biggest name to watch on Saturday might just be Mansfield's Brendan Murphy. Murphy has started to garner up some Player of the Year talk after his play so far this season. He's a threat on the offensive end that will command defensive focus from North Attleboro. Kevin Flynn has also played well this season at the forward position, complimenting Murphy offensively. Adam Blackman and Bryan Hurley are also players to keep an eye out for for Mansfield.
For Big Red, sophomore duo Sean Young and Marshall Blackman are absolutely tearing it up offensively this season. They both are above the 20-point plateau and show no signs of letting up. Seniors Ryan Burns has been an anchor on the defensive side while center Tim Joyce has been playing a solid role helping the two young sophomores develop.
