NORTH ATTLBORO, Mass. – The North Attleboro girls soccer team put in a dominating effort Monday afternoon at Kelley Field against rival Attleboro, beating them by a score of 7-0
North got off to a hot start with two goals from junior Grace Guertin. Both goals were assisted by junior Shannon Kingsley. One was a high cross which Guertin was able to push in, and the other a low cross which Guertin tapped in.
“We started off fast,” North Attleboro coach Doug Weldon said. “We made a couple of changes [from last game]. Nothing major but it seemed to work out.”
North kept the pressure on and in the 20th minute freshman Rachel LaBonte danced around the Attleboro keeper to make it 3-0.
In the last 10 minutes off the first half North added three more. Senior Courtney Barrett put the ball into the net after a great ball from freshman Haley Guertin. Then Guertin scored two of her own, both assisted by junior Hana Caster to make it 6-0 at halftime.
“We were on our home field and we wanted to get our payback,” Weldon said about an earlier loss to Attleboro.
North then came out in the firing again in the second half and they got their reward.
Off of a Courtney Hewitt corner the ball fell to junior Julia Mark just outside the box. Mark hit it with her right foot and put it right over the keeper's stretch for what was the goal of the match to make it 7-0.
North then locked down defensively, as they did the whole match with senior Hannah Kane and senior captain Marissa Moore only letting two shots at junior goalkeeper Kiersten Bixby.
“We’re going in one direction,” Weldon said about the upcoming MIAA tournament. “And today was a good day.”
It is now a waiting game for North Attleboro as they wait to see who and where they will play in the MIAA tournament.
