SHARON, Mass – History was made in Sharon Saturday, as the Eagles clinched their first ever Davenport Division title and playoff berth with a 14-7 win over Foxboro.
“We’re in uncharted territory,” Sharon head coach Dave Morse said. “It was a lot of hard work and it paid off.”
Sharon used stout defense and an opportunistic offense to earn the historic win. The win means that 9-1 Stoughton and 7-3 Foxboro will miss the playoffs.
"It feels great," Morse said. "This is the reason I came here. When I was an assistant here a couple years ago I saw the potential in the program. When the job became open I said I wanted it and this is why. This is what I saw a couple of years ago."
Sharon struck first in the opening quarter. Crutched by a pass interference call to get Sharon into Foxboro territory, senior Sean Asnes – who missed last week – took a hand off to the right and went 41 yards for a score. Eric Lesser’s kick was good, giving the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the first half or the third quarter. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the scoreboard changed.
With 4:09 left in the game, Morse made the decision to go for it on 4th and 9 from the Foxboro 25-yard line. It was a decision that would either result in glory or give Foxboro a golden opportunity.
Sharon quarterback Sean O’Neill floated one to the end zone where Brad Kaufman was able to haul it in for the touchdown and gave Sharon a 14-0 lead.
“The kid’s executed well, they knew what they were supposed to do.” O’Neill threw a great ball and Kaufman made a great play on the ball in the end zone.”
Foxboro came back with one last gasp, with Kiivone Howard going for 24 yards and then on the ensuing play, punching it in from 5 yards out, cutting Sharon’s lead in half.
The Warrior’s onside kick attempt didn’t work out though, and Sharon took control and sealed the Davenport crown.
Sharon will now play Pembroke in the first round of the playoffs after their Thanksgiving date with Oliver Ames.
