FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Attleboro (Mass.) native Geoff Cameron knew from a young age that he wanted to be a professional soccer player. Growing up just a stone’s throw from Foxborough, the young Cameron got all the inspiration and motivation he needed by watching his hometown Revolution. Fast forward through high school and a sterling college career with University of Rhode Island that included an NCAA tournament run and getting named Midfielder of the Year, Cameron found himself back in his home state on Saturday playing center back for the the defending Eastern Conference champion Houston Dynamo. “I had family and friends out there supporting [me],” said Cameron, who played the entirety of a 2-2 draw with the Revolution on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. “I grew up watching the Revs. One day I said I wanted to be on the field playing and having the opportunity to do that now is tremendous and I’m very lucky.” Cameron has made the most of his opportunities since Houston drafted him the third round of the 2008 SuperDraft. Now seen as one of the league’s most versatile players, he was a gem of a find for coach Dominic Kinnear, who drafted him in the third round (42nd overall) in the 2008 MLS Draft. That Cameron was available so late in the draft was shocking. It didn’t take long for him to get attention from the National Team. Shortly after the completion of his rookie season, Bob Bradley called Cameron for camp in January 2009. But an injury limited him, and Cameron was unable to make the most of his opportunity. Cameron got another shot this offseason, this time grabbing the attention of Jurgen Klinsmann. In January, he and former Revolution central defender Michael Parkhurst played 90 minutes in a 1-0 shutout of Venezuela. The match was seen as an enormous success for Cameron, who combined well with Parkhurst and shut down the Venezuelan attack. Weeks later, he was a part of the first U.S. squad to beat Italy in the Nats’ 1-0 win in Genoa on Feb. 29. Although the Attleboro native didn’t see any action in the historic win, he savors the time he has spent with the national team and is hungry to prove himself again. “Having the opportunity to get called in against Venezuela as well as being on the bench for the Italy game and being a part of that group was excellent and fantastic,” Cameron said. “Hopefully I get an opportunity to get (back to camp) and see what I can do.” Cameron is hoping to get that opportunity on Sunday. Last week, Klinsmann named the first half of his roster for a slate of games against Scotland, Brazil, Canada, Antigua & Barbuda and Guatemala. The rest of the call-ups – which are expected to included a number of MLS players – will be announced on Sunday. “Hopefully, everything goes well and I get called in,” finished Cameroon. “We’ll see how things go.” “Obviously, there’s a lot to improve in my game and I want to get better. If I get the call I’m going to listen to what the (national team coaching staff) has to say to get better and better.” Julian Cardillo can be reached at [email protected]. Stoughton baseball sits at 9-9 overall and is 5-7 in the Hockomock League, but none of that matters much anymore. They have a one game season now – a league faceoff with Canton on Monday – and if they want to qualify for the postseason they’re going to have to win it. The Black Knights topped Sharon (7-9 overall) 5-2 at home on Wednesday to pull ahead in the overall record category, but with Sharon’s 6-7 league record the Eagles have clinched at least a share of second place in the Hockomock's Davenport Division. With both the first and second place teams from both the Kelly-Rex and Davenport divisions advancing to the state tournament, Sharon has already earned an extended season. Stoughton can tie Sharon’s league record by defeating Canton on the road, which would send both squads on to the tournament. The Black Knights have another way in too. After Friday’s 6-0 defeat of Quincy, Stoughton is just one win shy of 10 victories on the season – the magic number that automatically qualifies a team for a tournament berth. Now, Stoughton’s season hinges solely upon the outcome of Monday’s showdown with the Bulldogs; it’s win or stay home. In such a do or die situation, Stoughton is leaning on their talented young leadership – senior captain Brian Kaplan, and junior captains Pat Jackman and Mike Connelly – to set the example. “I think it takes a special junior to be a captain, especially when you have upperclassmen on the team,” said Stoughton head coach Mike Armour. “The two juniors who are captains for us have been playing ball since their freshman years. They’re great players – Pat [Jackman] at shortstop and Mike [Connelly] catching – and great guys who I have no doubt will be playing at the next level somewhere.” Jackman has been a force for the Black Knights this year, batting .474 and fielding .964 at shortstop through Stoughton's first 16 games. The dynamic player leads the team in hits, runs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. He’s playing the kind of consistently solid defense in the middle that he has in each of the three varsity seasons he already has under his belt, and his relentless offensive attack has paced Stoughton in 2012. “It’s been really cool to see Pat [Jackman] grow,” said Armour. “Naming a junior captain is always kind of a stressful thing; it doesn’t always work out and you never know what you’re going to get. To see Pat grab a hold of this team and to become a vocal leader, to rally up the boys and with his phenomenal attitude, it’s like if you’re coaching a team of Pat Jackmans it’s just an absolute dream come true. He’s been unbelievable.” Jackman admits that playing a more vocal role was something he had to work at, but his two prior years of varsity experience eased the transition. “Being named a captain as a junior was an honor because the teammates voted and it was a great accomplishment in that sense,” said Jackman. “I’ve never really been outspoken, but being a captain has made me more vocal as well as made we want to set a nice example out on the field.” The examples set by those who came before him guide Jackman now as he and his fellow captains brace themselves to lead a push for the tournament. “My freshman year we had a good team and went to the tournament and the leadership they kind of made me into who I am now,” said Jackman. Having significant playing time under his belt doesn’t hurt either. Jackman has been a role player from the moment he arrived on varsity. “I started shortstop as a freshman, so I was always in the game and never really riding the bench and it was great to get to be a part of it,” he said. “Our coach really tied me in nicely and I never felt like a freshman. I was treated as part of the team so I felt like I was. Freshman was just kind of a label to me.” Away from the diamond, Jackman has been a standout for Stoughton’s winter track squad too, and he feels that has improved his baseball play significantly. “I played basketball freshman year and dropped that, so I took up winter track as something to keep busy and to get ready for baseball, but it kind of helped me more than I expected it to,” Jackman explained. “It keeps me competitive, keeps me in shape, and on the bases as well the workouts that we do in winter track have helped me more than I ever would have thought they would on the baseball field.” A trip to the postseason as a freshman is something Jackman has carried with him and something he’d like his younger teammates to experience too. “Making the tournament freshman year (2010) always stands out to me,” Jackman said. “It was something we hadn’t done in a few years. We had Milton in the first round and lost five to nothing, but just seeing the whole town come together – having probably 500 people lined up along the fence for us at Milton – that was great.” Whether Stoughton advances to the tournament or not, the Black Knights are enjoying what will be their final run with departing seniors like co-captain Kaplan, who pitched a complete game shutout in that pivotal tilt with Quincy on Friday. “The team we have now, I’ve been playing with most of them since I was in Little League so just to see everyone develop has been great,” said Jackman. “We’ve kind of been waiting for this since we were little and the with chemistry between us, we’re like a family.” But the Black Knights aren’t ready to hang it up just yet. They’re hoping to extend their seniors’ careers at Stoughton at least a few more games. “Our goal this year is definitely to make the tournament by winning our next couple of games and make some noise behind our solid pitching,” said Jackman of his team’s mentality. “If we can get our bats going we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with.” When this season does eventually come to a close, though, Stoughton will still be poised for a solid showing in 2013 behind their returning junior captains. “You know Mike [Connelly] isn’t as vocal of a guy, but the kids believe in him and he’s a real leader for this team too but more with his actions than his words,” said Armour. “We’re just very fortunate to have to have Pat and Mike now, and even more that they will be back next year.” Jackman is eager to see just how far his squad can go in his senior season for the Black Knights. “Not to look too far ahead, but next year we have I want to say 7 of our 9 players out there now who are underclassmen, including myself,” said Jackman. “We’re definitely revved up for next season and will be ready to go.” Friday's scheduled games and scores!

The Foxboro girls’ lacrosse team had a habit last year of taking two steps forward and then one step back. But things are a lot different this season. Under first-year coach Brittany Jamieson, the Warriors clinched the Davenport Division Title with a 12-9 win over the defending champion Canton Bulldogs on Monday. Early pressure to make sure that senior captain Abby Tepper notched her 100th career goal led to a low scoring affair early on. Tied a 3-3, Tepper reached the milestone with 7:36 to go in the first half off a shot from the left – becoming only the third Warrior in the program’s eight-year history to reach the century mark. “Getting my 100th goal is a huge accomplishment because I’m standing next to Sarah Giardino and Rachel Jamieson who are very good athletes in the program and I’m in their group now,” Tepper said of the feat. Coach Jamieson also had praise for Tepper after Monday’s game. “It’s huge for the program, it’s huge for her,” said Jamieson. “She’s a leader, she deserved it, she worked hard in practice, she worked hard in games, and it shows.” With the pressure of getting Tepper to her magic number behind them, the Warriors went on to score four more goals in the first half to Canton’s one. Expected to have a huge game, Ellen Decker’s five goals led the Warriors as they marched into halftime up 11-4. “I spoke with Ellen before the game started and I said ‘this needs to be a huge game for you,’” Jamieson said. “She has an unbelievable shot. You don’t know even know she has the ball in the stick until its in the net.” A goal by Decker tied the game at two and another one off a pass by Kelsie Morahan at the top of the 12-meter fan once again knotted the game at three. Decker netter two more in the first half, while a wraparound goal by Tepper helped extend the lead. With a sizeable halftime lead, the message was clear from the Warriors’ coach: be calm for the next 25 minutes and force Canton to do the work. “My message at halftime was we no longer have to do the work so let Canton do it,” Jamieson said. “It’s hard to stay settled for 25 minutes so they went out there attacking unnecessarily and I told them let Canton do the work because they have to, we don’t.” Despite a 4-1 rally from the Bulldogs, the Warriors refused to score in an attempt to avoid getting into a draw. With Canton’s strengths in the faceoff all game long, even a goal could do damage for the Warriors. With orders to run around the field and even “run to Dairy Queen if you have to,” from a frantic coach Jamieson, Morahan was able to literally run out most of the final three minutes to take away any chance of a Canton comeback. The Warriors (9-5 overall, 7-2 league) will now face either King Philip or Franklin for the Hockomock Cup next week. Foxboro plays their final league game tomorrow at Oliver Ames.
