Game of the Week - 01/06/12
By: Josh Brown
Breakdown:
Over the years, Stoughton and Oliver Ames have had games that show us what makes high school basketball so great. Big crowds, buzzer beating shots, and the will to win is what makes this rivalry one that can compete with any other rivalry in the state. The first thing that many, not only players, but fans do is circle the dates of the two Stoughton-Oliver Ames games. The first of these two bouts is this Friday January, 6th. Both of these teams enter the game at 5-0, with quality wins for both teams. Since the 2007-2008 season, Stoughton holds a 7-1 record in the series. Over the last two years, no game has been decided by more than 3 points. One can only expect this match up will produce much of the same, with the only two unbeaten teams left in the Hockomock league. On top of all of that, the majority of players on both teams experienced their OT-thriller and 4OT-roller coaster games last year. If you want to see a great game of basketball come down to Stoughton this Friday for the first of two games for these Hockomock power houses.
Players To Watch:
For Oliver Ames the Tigers are going to need big games out of senior captain Nick Bruha and junior guard St. Clair Ryan. These two players have carried Oliver Ames this year, and if the Tigers want to knock Stoughton off their game, they are going to be huge. For Stoughton players to watch are junior guard Mauro Oliveira and senior forward Raymond Bowdre. Stoughton fans know junior guards Aaron Calixte and Marcus Middleton and poised for big games against Oliver Ames, but if Stoughton can get solid production from Olivera and Bowdre, they will be in a good position to win the game.
Other Key Players: Andrew Reardon (OA), Joe Bunce-Grenon (Stoughton), Nick Cidado (OA), Steffan Jackson (Stoughton).
Key Matchup:
Rebounding is huge in a game like this, where both teams are high scoring teams. For this reason the match up between Oliver Ames senior forward Jeff Babbitt and Stoughton senior forward Antonio "Nuke" Ferreira is huge. Whichever player can grab defensive rebounds and limit the other teams opportunities may decide a game like this which is always so historically close.
What Else To Watch:
Both of these teams play with a very high tempo, for this reason both team's benches are going to be huge. Both teams are going to need big production from the bench if they want to win this game.
